Is it really as a black and white as to hedge or not to hedge? Is that the right way to look at managing currency exposures?

Not any more.  To hedge or not to hedge is no longer the question.  The question to hedge or not to hedge has evolved into asking to purchase or not to purchase a derivative.  The question should revert back to its origin. Should one protect a risk to a corporation and if so what alternatives should one exercise.  Digging deeper into this question we have discovered that risk management policies – in the majority of cases outdated - can be complied with by simply purchasing derivatives.  Thus why take this any further?

Treasuries are tasked by doing more with less. More and more treasuries understand that there are alternatives that assist them in leveraging their ERPs etc to extract information that can be analyzed to make more informed and subsequent better decisions.  If your company is still spending 90% of their time on gathering information then you are still trying to answer a question that will soon be as in the same age category as Shakespeare’s ‘to be or not to be.’

Are you still spending 90 % of the currency risk management process gathering data?  Yes, this is a leading question as you very likely should look to spend time looking for a tool that can help facilitate data gathering so you can spend time on the more important part, data analytics and ultimately decision making.

What issues are you dealing with that make you hesitate to focus on data analytics and decision making?
